Molière is one of the greatest French playwrights and a major figure of classical theatre. Born Jean-Baptiste Poquelin, he founded L’Illustre Théâtre and revolutionized comedy by blending social satire, humor, and criticism of the customs of his time. His most famous works include The Misanthrope, Tartuffe, The Miser, The Imaginary Invalid, and Dom Juan. Molière often performed in his own plays and famously died on stage after a performance of The Imaginary Invalid, ironically playing a suffering man. His theatrical legacy remains alive across the world.
